Backup & Restore
Protect your data with automatic daily backups and easy one-click restore.
Backup & Restore
Chronoid automatically backs up your data daily, so you never lose your tracked time, projects, or rules. You can also create manual backups at any time and restore from any backup point.
Automatic Daily Backups
Chronoid runs an automatic backup once per day. These backups happen silently in the background — no action required.
You can see all existing backups (automatic and manual) listed in Settings → Backup.
Create a Manual Backup
To create a backup right now:
- Open Settings
- Go to the Backup section
- Click Backup Now
Manual backups are useful before making major changes to your rules, projects, or settings.
Restore from a Backup
To restore your data to a previous state:
- Open Settings → Backup
- Select the backup you want to restore
- Confirm the restore
Before restoring, Chronoid automatically creates a safety copy of your current data. This means you can undo a restore if needed.
Restoring replaces your current data with the backup contents. All changes made after the backup point will be lost.
Retention Policies
Chronoid manages backup storage automatically:
| Setting | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Max backup count | 30 | Oldest backups are deleted when this limit is reached |
| Max total size | 500 MB | Oldest backups are deleted when total size exceeds this |
You can adjust both limits in Settings → Backup.
Custom Backup Location
By default, backups are stored in Chronoid's application data folder. To change the location:
- Open Settings → Backup
- Click Change Location
- Select a new folder (e.g., an external drive or cloud-synced folder)
Chronoid offers to migrate existing backups to the new location.
Open and Delete Backups
- Open in Finder — Click to reveal backup files in Finder for manual copying or archiving
- Delete — Remove individual backups you no longer need to free up space
Tips
- Create a manual backup before major changes — Reorganizing projects or rules? Back up first.
- Use a cloud-synced folder — Set your backup location to a Dropbox or iCloud folder for off-device protection
- Check backup size periodically — If backups are growing large, review your retention settings
